Calcium is essential to build and maintain bones. Calcium combines with other minerals, especially phosphorus and magnesium, to a lesser extent, hard crystals that give bone its strength. About 99% of body calcium is in bones. When the diet is deficient in calcium and not enough on the diet, some crystals of calcium in the bones dissolve and give their blood calcium back to maintain the healthy function of the heart, muscles, nerves and other organs. Consequently, the bones act as a reservoir for calcium storage and release into the bloodstream when necessary. So if your calcium intake is very low and there are more withdrawals of deposits from the pool of calcium from the bones, you may lose bone strength.
